Arunachal Pradesh has recorded the highest known elephant range in the world, with a new assessment documenting elephant presence at elevations of 3,000 metres above sea level.

The study was conducted jointly by WWF-India and the State Forest Department between December 2024 and March 2026. It confirms the state’s position as one of India’s most important biodiversity hotspots.

Apart from the record elevation, the assessment provides valuable insights into three areas; mapping of herds and movement patterns across diverse terrains, identification of key wildlife corridors used by elephants, data on conflict-prone zones to guide mitigation measures.

The finding reinforces the importance of protecting Arunachal’s forests, wildlife corridors, and overall biodiversity for future generations. The state’s varied topography, from lowland forests to high altitude zones, supports a wide range of flora and fauna.

Arunachal Pradesh is part of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot and hosts significant populations of Asian elephants, tigers, and other endangered species.
