Agartala, June 09, 2026: In a major enforcement drive against the illegal sale of liquor and narcotic substances, the West Tripura district administration and police on Monday late evening conducted a surprise operation at Battala Market, leading to the detention of a youth allegedly involved in selling intoxicants near the Old Hawkers’ Market area.
The joint operation was personally led by West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar and Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak. SDPO D.P. Ray, Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station Rana Chatterjee, along with a large team of police and administrative officials, also took part in the crackdown.
During the raid, officials reportedly apprehended a young man while he was allegedly attempting to sell brown sugar and other intoxicating substances commonly referred to as “kouta.” The suspect was taken into custody for further investigation.
Expressing concern over the open sale of intoxicants in residential localities, the District Magistrate said such activities pose a serious threat to the younger generation and cannot be tolerated. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to protecting youths from addiction and ensuring a safer social environment.
The operation covered several parts of Battala Market and adjoining areas, targeting illegal liquor outlets and unauthorized sales of narcotic substances. Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak said similar drives would continue in the future to dismantle networks involved in the illicit trade.
Residents welcomed the action and hoped that sustained enforcement would help curb substance abuse and strengthen law and order across the state.
