Guwahati, June 12: Assam Minister of Irrigation, Pijush Hazarika, undertook a detailed inspection of the Maloibari Electrical Lift Irrigation Scheme (ELIS) in Dimoria Legislative Assembly Constituency soon after assuming charge of the department. The Minister visited four pump centres along with the canal networks to assess their operational condition and the effectiveness of irrigation services being delivered to farmers.

During the visit, Hazarika interacted with departmental officials and local farmers, reviewing infrastructure status and discussing measures to strengthen and expand the irrigation system. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that government services reach the grassroots effectively, benefitting the farming community.

The Maloibari ELIS, one of the oldest irrigation schemes in the region, has been operational for over five decades. It provides assured irrigation to nearly 1,800 hectares of farmland and supports around 5,000 farmers, playing a vital role in enhancing agricultural productivity and sustaining rural livelihoods.

The Minister stated his commitment to making both the Agriculture and Irrigation Departments more people-centric and responsive to public needs. He further informed that he would continue visiting irrigation projects across the state to gain firsthand knowledge of their functioning and challenges. Such field visits, he noted, would help identify issues on the ground and enable timely interventions to strengthen Assam’s irrigation infrastructure.

Dimoria MLA Tapan Das, the Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department, and other officials from the Irrigation and Agriculture Departments accompanied the Minister during the inspection.
