The Manipur government has announced the resumption of inter-district public transport services under heavy security from today. This marks the administration’s second attempt in 19 months to restore connectivity between the state capital, Imphal, and the hill districts, amid a prolonged ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The decision follows a detailed review of the law and order situation, available security forces, and inputs from various agencies, according to an official order issued by Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi. The public buses will operate along two key routes: from Imphal to Senapati via Kangpokpi, and from Imphal to Churachandpur via Bishnupur.
The routes traverse areas dominated by different ethnic groups, including the Meitei, Naga, and Kuki-Zo communities. To ensure safety, the movement of vehicles will be restricted to specific hours, and individuals wishing to travel must coordinate with the Deputy Commissioners’ offices.
“This initiative is aimed at alleviating the grievances of the general public,” the order stated, urging citizens to cooperate with the administration. The government warned of strict legal action against anyone disrupting vehicle movement.
A previous attempt to resume services in December last year failed due to road blockades and poor public participation. The government hopes that this renewed effort, supported by heightened security, will successfully restore connectivity and bring some relief to residents.
