Mangan, Jan 2: A newly constructed extra-wide Bailey bridge at Sangklang was inaugurated on Thursday, significantly boosting connectivity in Sikkim’s Dzongu region. The ceremony was led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, alongside Forest & Environment Minister and Dzongu Area MLA Pintso Namgyal Lepcha. Also present were Zilla Upadhakshya Sonam Kipa Bhutia, Commanding Officer of the 72 Engineer Regiment Col. Alok Shankar, and Officer Commanding 107 RCC Major Ram Lakhan Tewatia.
The 180-foot bridge, designed to support a load capacity of 24 tonnes, was built by Trishakti Sappers in collaboration with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Construction began on December 26, 2024, and the bridge was completed in just six days, becoming operational on January 1, 2025. While the bridge is temporary and will be dismantled in the summer due to rising water levels, it will serve as a crucial transportation lifeline for the region during this period.
Zilla Upadhakshya Sonam Kipa Bhutia lauded the efforts of Trishakti Corps and BRO for overcoming the region’s challenging terrain and disaster-prone conditions. She emphasized the bridge’s role in restoring vital connectivity between Dzongu and Mangan, facilitating the transportation of goods and improving access to essential services.
Local residents expressed their appreciation to the Chief Minister, Area MLA, and all those involved in the project. While the bridge is temporary, they highlighted its significant positive impact on daily life, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Namsoong Festival.
