Mizoram has taken proactive measures in response to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India by forming a core committee to tackle the potential spread of the virus. The committee was set up following a meeting chaired by Health Minister Lalrinpuii on Tuesday, aimed at assessing the situation and implementing necessary precautions.
In addition to the core committee, the state government has deployed a Rapid Response Team to monitor developments in all districts. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) issued a public notice to reassure the public, stating that there have been no reports of influenza-like illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in Mizoram, despite global concerns over HMPV.
The health department has instructed both government and private hospitals to submit daily reports on any ILI or SARI cases as part of enhanced surveillance. Furthermore, Mizoram continues to implement its Pneumonia Control Programme and SAANS campaign to reduce respiratory infections.
Health officials are calling for cooperation from both healthcare providers and the public to ensure the effective execution of these measures. Citizens are advised to report any suspected ILI or SARI cases to local health facilities or wellness centers for early intervention.
This action follows the confirmation of two HMPV cases in Karnataka and Gujarat, involving infants in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. These cases have raised concerns about local transmission, especially as neither patient had a history of international travel. Despite the rise in HMPV cases globally, the World Health Organization has yet to declare a global health emergency.
