Aizawl, Jan 15: Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma launched the “Empowering Mizoram Sports” (EMS) program on Tuesday under the Mizoram Bana Kaih Scheme 2024, at the Directorate of Economics & Statistics Conference Hall in Aizawl. The initiative aims to enhance sports training and create pathways for Mizoram’s youth to compete at national and international levels, with a focus on preparing athletes for the 2036 Olympics.
In his address, the Chief Minister acknowledged Mizoram’s strong sports culture but highlighted the challenges the state faces in achieving success at national competitions. “Mizos are naturally passionate about sports, but we need to provide better training and infrastructure to unlock their full potential,” he stated.
The EMS program, which has received a ₹2.5 crore allocation, will target children aged 8 to 15 and prioritize sports with high potential for Olympic qualification. The program will be implemented in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with communities playing a significant role in supporting logistics, food, and accommodations for the athletes.
Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services, emphasized that the EMS initiative is about more than just training athletes. “We aim to instill a sense of ownership within the communities to ensure the long-term success of the program,” he said.
The program will begin as a pilot project in a few districts and gradually expand statewide. The launch event was chaired by H. Lalhmingthanga, Director of the Sports & Youth Services Department. Lalramsanga Sailo, IRS, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, delivered the welcome speech, while Henry C. Lalrawnkima, Secretary of the Mizoram State Sports Council, presented a detailed overview of the program.
