Kokrajhar, Jan 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday inaugurated several significant development projects in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), celebrating the region’s transformation since the historic 2020 Bodo Accord.
Speaking at the event, Sarma inaugurated 50 new quarters for the Executive Members (EMs) and Members of the Council Legislative Assembly (MCLAs), underscoring the rapid development in the region. He emphasized that the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly session, to be held in Kokrajhar on February 17, would symbolize a new chapter of unity and progress, moving away from the region’s history of separatist movements.
“The Bodo Agitation once sought the division of Assam. Today, Kokrajhar will host the Legislative Assembly session, marking a milestone in the journey towards peace and prosperity,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister highlighted the substantial investments made in BTR, noting that Rs 100 crore was allocated for the newly inaugurated quarters. “The foundation for this project was laid a couple of years ago by CEM Pramod Boro, UG Brahma, and myself, and today, we celebrate its completion,” Sarma said.
Sarma also reflected on the region’s growth since the Bodo Accord, with particular emphasis on the expansion of education and healthcare. “Before the accord, there was no medical college in this region. Today, we have two medical colleges. Additionally, Kokrajhar University will start this April, with plans for a permanent campus in the future,” he added.
Further, Sarma laid the foundation stone for a new administrative building for Kokrajhar University. He also noted the increasing prominence of the Bodo language in the Assam Legislative Assembly, which now plays a key role in the conduct of legislative business alongside Assamese.
In relation to the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, Sarma assured continued cooperation with political allies, particularly Pramod Boro and Dilip Saikia, and reaffirmed that the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) would remain an integral part of the NDA.
