Agartala, February 20, 2025: A female police constable named Suniti Sarkar has allegedly ended her life by hanging herself at her residence, reportedly due to the fear of police action in connection with a loan she had taken.

Sources informed, Suniti Sarkar, who was posted at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station had taken a loan from a Bank to build a two-storey house in the Netaji Nagar area under Amtali Police Station. However, she struggled to repay the loan on time. “The bank authorities repeatedly pressured her and even started threatening that police action would be taken against her,” said a family member, adding that the threats deeply distressed Suniti.

Her husband Debdulal Sarkar stated that she had informed him about the pressure from the bank and had also shared her concerns with other relatives. “We tried to console her assuring that things would be resolved. But she was extremely worried,” he said.

On Wednesday, while on duty at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station, Suniti reportedly received alarming news that the police would arrest her if she returned home. Overcome with fear and anxiety, she rushed back to her residence. The next morning, when her family members were away, she allegedly hanged herself.

When Sarkar returned home a short while later, he found his wife’s dead body and raised an alarm. Neighbors rushed to the house and the Amtali Police Station was immediately informed.

Sub-Inspector Hiren Debbarma, accompanied by the Deputy Collector Magistrate reached the scene and conducted an inquiry. “The body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Tripura Medical College & Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital at Hapania for autopsy,” the officer said.

The Amtali Police Station has registered an unnatural death case and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to Suniti Sarkar’s suicide.

The 40-year-old officer leaves behind her husband, son and mother-in-law, who were present in the house at the time of the incident. The tragic episode has cast a deep shadow of sorrow over the locality, with many questioning the severe pressures faced by individuals struggling with financial burdens.
