Agartala, May 20, 2026: In a major push towards clean and sustainable energy, the Tripura government has announced an ambitious initiative to provide rooftop solar power systems to nearly 1.5 lakh families in the state at a nominal cost of just ₹1,000.

The announcement was made by Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath during the launch of the “Rooftop Solar PV System Handbook” at Gitanjali Guest House in Agartala on Tuesday.

Highlighting the rapid progress of the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana, the Minister said more than 17,000 people in Tripura have already registered under the scheme, while around 3,500 households have successfully installed rooftop solar systems.

He informed that the government is currently identifying families consuming less than 50 units of electricity per month. Under the proposed plan, such families will receive solar systems worth nearly ₹66,000 by contributing only ₹1,000, while the remaining cost will be covered through government subsidies.

“The government is providing subsidies of up to ₹33,000 for a 1-kilowatt system, ₹66,000 for a 2-kilowatt system, and ₹85,800 for a 3-kilowatt solar system,” the Minister stated.

According to official estimates, nearly 3 lakh families in Tripura consume less than 50 units of electricity monthly. In the first phase, 1.5 lakh of these families will be brought under the scheme. The state aims to generate nearly 150 megawatts of solar power through the initiative, with implementation expected to begin from next month.

The Minister further said that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation, in collaboration with German development agency GIZ, has been conducting specialised training programmes for engineers, officials and vendors on the maintenance and repair of solar systems. Following the training, two informative handbooks in English and Bengali have been published to help consumers understand and adopt the technology more easily.

Emphasising the economic benefits of solar energy, Nath remarked that people are no longer only paying electricity bills but are also getting opportunities to generate income through solar power generation.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would not only reduce electricity costs but also contribute significantly to the economic development of the people while strengthening the state’s renewable energy infrastructure.
