After a two-year hiatus, the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association (MHRPA) is set to host the 15th Manipur Polo International from November 22 to 29 at Mapal Kangjeibung. This was announced by Prof. Ch. Priyoranjan, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the tournament, during a press conference held today at Uripok Ningthoukhongjam Leikai.

Prof. Priyoranjan informed that Colombia and the United States have confirmed their participation, while Spain and Italy are likely to join depending on circumstances. The India Polo Association (IPA) will field an India A team, while teams from Chhattisgarh and Manipur (India B) will complete the lineup.

The MHRPA organised the first edition of the international tournament in 1991, and the event has since grown into a major attraction. Over the years, it has drawn capacity crowds to Mapal Kangjeibung, with spectators showing overwhelming support for both international teams and local players.

For many foreign participants, the Manipur Polo International is also a pilgrimage to the birthplace of polo—Sagol Kangjei—which evolved into modern polo and was later popularised globally by the British.

Highlighting the tournament’s impact, Prof. Ch. Chittaranjan noted that polo has witnessed a surge in popularity among Manipur’s youth, with over 200 players now active in the state. The event has also become a symbol of the ongoing effort to save the endangered Manipur Pony, the original mount of the game.

The tournament has provided a vital platform for local players to showcase their talent, leading to employment opportunities in organisations such as the Veterinary Department, Manipur Police and the Assam Rifles.

The MHRPA urged the public to support the tournament and the wider mission of promoting polo while strengthening efforts to conserve the Manipur Pony. Despite past challenges, conservation initiatives—bolstered by the Manipur Polo Policy 2016—are gaining momentum. Through tournaments like the Manipur Polo International, N. Hazari, the Governor’s Cup, and district-level events, the association continues its commitment to both the sport and the preservation of the pony.

Chairman of the Technical Committee Ningthoukhongjam Bedajeet Singh, Chairman of the Media Committee N. Tombi Raj, and President of the Manipur Equestrian Association Col. L. Manongba (Retd.) were also present at the press meet.
