Agartala, February 04, 2026: Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy on Tuesday said that the year 2025–26 will be remembered as a bright and historic milestone in the sporting journey of both India and Tripura, marked by unprecedented international achievements and the state’s impressive performance at the 69th National School Games.
Sharing these achievements in social media handles, Roy mentioned India’s remarkable rise on the global sports stage, coupled with Tripura’s glorious march in the National School Games, has opened new horizons of confidence, capability and potential. “This period will not only be recorded for its achievements, but will also stand as an inspiring chapter built on hard work, discipline and strong mental strength,” he said.
Highlighting India’s international successes, the minister recalled Neeraj Chopra’s historic javelin throw of 90.23 metres, breaking the long-awaited 90m barrier. He also cited Sheetal Devi’s gold at the Para Archery World Championships, Devika Sihag’s victory at the Thailand Masters in women’s badminton, Divya Deshmukh becoming the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup, and boxing gold medals won by Jasmine Lamboria (57 kg) and Meenakshi Hooda (48 kg) at the Liverpool World Championships.
Roy further noted that India finished second with eight gold medals at the Asian Athletics Championships and delivered its best-ever performance at the World Para Athletics Championships in Delhi, securing 22 medals, including six gold.
In team events, the minister said India also scripted history with the women’s cricket team winning the World Cup for the first time, the men’s cricket team clinching the Champions Trophy, the women’s blind cricket team lifting the World Cup, the youth football team winning the SAFF U-19 Championship, the men’s hockey team winning the Asia Cup, and the men’s youth hockey team earning a bronze medal at the World Cup.
Turning to Tripura’s achievements, Roy said the state further strengthened its presence on the national sports map at the 69th National School Games, where its athletes won a total of 20 medals—six gold, seven silver and seven bronze. He described the achievement as a reflection of confidence, discipline and sustained effort, and a strong foundation for Tripura’s future sporting potential.
Concluding, the minister said India’s international success and Tripura’s progress clearly demonstrate that with the right leadership, planning, relentless practice and unwavering mental strength, the country and its states can secure a stronger and more glorious position on the global sports stage.
