Gangtok, Feb 27: A series of earthquakes has sparked widespread panic in Sikkim, with multiple tremors reported late Thursday and into early Friday. The most recent occurred at around 4:10 a.m. today a shallow 3.7 magnitude quake at a depth of 5 km, centered at 27.40° N latitude and 88.69° E longitude, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Residents across the state, especially in West Sikkim, reported strong shaking.
Yesterday alone, Sikkim experienced four separate quakes, causing damage to infrastructure at Gangyap School and Gerethang School. No casualties or major damage have been reported so far. Authorities are assessing the situation and have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh felt a 3.4 magnitude earthquake in Changlang district on February 15 at 8:50 p.m. IST. The tremor, at a depth of 10 km, occurred at 27.32° N latitude and 96.12° E longitude. According to NCS, no damage or casualties were reported.
The recent activity highlights the seismic vulnerability of the northeastern region, prompting officials to emphasize earthquake preparedness among residents.
