Agartala, March 27, 2026: In a major anti-narcotics operation, police on Friday seized 35 vials of suspected brown sugar during a raid in the embankment area adjacent to RGM Hospital in Kailashahar town and detained two persons, while the main accused managed to flee.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a large police team conducted the raid at around 1 pm at the residence of one Mithu Chowdhury, police said.

During the search operation, police recovered approximately 35 vials of suspected brown sugar from the house. However, the prime accused, Mithu Chowdhury, allegedly escaped before the police reached the spot after reportedly receiving advance information about the raid.

Police detained Mithu Chowdhury’s wife, Mampi Chowdhury, who was present at the residence during the operation. During preliminary questioning, she reportedly admitted that her husband had been engaged in illegal drug trafficking for a considerable period, according to police sources.

Another person, identified as Nirmal Malakar of Rangauti area under Gournagar RD Block, was also detained in connection with the case.

A large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifles personnel took part in the raid under the supervision of Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rughul A and Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar Police Station Tapas Malakar.

Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar said the operation was launched on the basis of confidential intelligence and resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of brown sugar.

“Although the prime accused remains absconding, efforts are on to arrest him at the earliest. Strict legal action will be taken against the detained persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway to identify others linked to the network,” he said.

The incident has triggered concern across the locality, while police intensified search operations to trace the absconding accused.
