Agartala, March 28, 2026: Government of Tripura has approved the opening of 450 new pre-primary units in government schools across the state from the academic session 2026–27, significantly expanding early childhood education infrastructure under the provisions of the National Education Policy 2020.
According to a memorandum issued by the Directorate of Elementary Education under the state’s Pre-School Education Unit, all District Education Officers have been directed to take immediate steps for operationalising the pre-primary units in the schools listed and ensure that the process is carried out strictly in accordance with departmental guidelines.
Officials said that before 2018, Tripura had only nine pre-primary schools. Since then, 236 additional pre-primary schools have been opened across the state. With the fresh addition of 450 pre-primary units, the total number of pre-primary units in government schools will rise to 695.
An official of the Education Department said the expansion has been planned in view of the strong emphasis laid on early childhood education in the National Education Policy and to improve enrolment in government schools. Proposals for opening the new units were received from headmasters from different parts of the state, particularly from schools facing low enrolment.
The memorandum asked District Education Officers to provide all necessary support to identified schools for smooth commencement of the units and submit feasibility reports on the opening of the facilities. Schools have also been instructed to update the UDISE+ portal after enrolment so that financial support can be processed.
The department further directed that headmasters, principals, teachers, school management committees, parents and local bodies be informed and sensitised to facilitate nursery admissions from the coming academic session.
Officials said any issues related to opening of the pre-primary units would be resolved at the district level depending on feasibility and local requirements.
