Mizoram has reported an estimated loss of Rs 963.14 crore due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) since 2021, which has resulted in the death of 68,172 pigs, according to the state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.
In response to the outbreak, pigs were culled across affected areas between 2021 and 2023 as a containment measure. The state government has disbursed over Rs 14 crore as compensation to farmers whose livestock were culled during this period.
The first case of ASF in Mizoram was detected on March 21, 2021, in Lungsen village of Lunglei district, near the Bangladesh border. Efforts are ongoing to prevent further spread of the disease.
