Agartala, February 24, 2026: Passenger bus services between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka have resumed today after being suspended for 18 months due to instability in Bangladesh. Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury welcomed passengers at the Akhaura border, joined by TRTC’s Acting Chairman Samar Roy, Managing Director Hemanta Debbarma, and other officials.

The Agartala–Kolkata Maitree and Shyamoli bus services were first launched in 2001 to strengthen connectivity between India and Bangladesh. However, operations were halted in September 2024 amid political unrest in Bangladesh, with authorities citing passenger safety concerns. Following the formation of a stable government under Tarique Rahman and the simplification of visa procedures, services have now been restored.

Speaking to reporters, Minister Chowdhury emphasized that the bus service is more than just a mode of transport. “It is a bridge of communication, culture, and commerce between the people of India and Bangladesh. Such initiatives strengthen friendship and pave the way for development,” he said.

He added that the resumption of services would positively impact tourism, trade, and people-to-people ties, fostering peace and prosperity in the region. “India has always considered Bangladesh as a close relative and neighbor. Any unrest there causes concern here as well. With the new government in place, relations have returned to a positive trajectory,” Chowdhury noted.

Officials expressed optimism that the restored service will deepen historical, cultural, and economic bonds between the two nations. “Just as this bus reaches its destination, India and Bangladesh will move forward together on the path of trust, cooperation, and development,” the minister concluded.
