Guwahati, Dec 11: Fourteen labourers from Assam’s Tinsukia district have died and seven remain missing after the truck they were traveling in fell into a deep gorge in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district earlier this week, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The incident took place on the Hayuliang-Chaglagam Road. Rescue teams have recovered 14 bodies and rescued one survivor, while seven people are still unaccounted for, said Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapneel Paul.

A team from Tinsukia, including police officials and a circle officer, has been dispatched to assist in rescue operations. Authorities are awaiting further updates as the team reaches the remote site.

Tinsukia Circle Officer Jaideep Rajak stated that the workers were hired by a private contractor for a project in Hayuliang and were traveling in a dumper when it skidded off the road and fell about 1,000 feet into the gorge.

Tinsukia Senior Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar said all 22 labourers from Dhelaghat, Gillapukri Tea Estate, were heading to Arunachal Pradesh for hostel construction. Of these, 21 are presumed dead.

One worker, Budheswor Deep, survived and alerted relatives. So far, 19 labourers have been identified, including 12 deceased and seven missing. Rescue operations continue amid difficult terrain.
