A two-day bird survey conducted at Nongsaya Lake in Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai district has documented 89 bird species, highlighting the region’s rich biodiversity, officials said on Thursday.

The survey was carried out by the Arunachal Pradesh Birding Club (APBC) in collaboration with the Public Works Department (PWD) at the lake situated in the Jona area, around 9 km from Namsai town. Conservationist Koj Mama stated that the survey aimed to emphasize the ecological importance of the lake and its surrounding habitat.

“The survey was undertaken recognising the critical ecological role the lake plays,” Mama said.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, in a statement shared on social media, praised the ecological value of the region. He noted the presence of rare species such as the Assam Pasa butterfly and the Lesser Adjutant, reflecting the area’s thriving biodiversity.

Mein further added that Nongsaya Lake, with its natural serenity and pristine environment, holds significant potential to develop as a global birdwatching and eco-tourism destination. He commended the efforts of APBC, PWD Namsai Division, and local nature enthusiasts for their role in the successful survey.
