Agartala, February 17, 2026: The Ministry of Railways has rolled out the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) to usher in a new era of modern, passenger-centric infrastructure across Indian Railways. The scheme adopts a long-term, phased development strategy, with detailed Master Plans for each selected station to systematically enhance passenger amenities and core infrastructure.

Under ABSS, emphasis is being placed on improving station access and circulation areas, upgrading waiting halls and toilets, installing lifts and escalators wherever required, strengthening cleanliness standards, and providing free Wi-Fi. The redevelopment also features modern passenger information systems, Executive Lounges, designated spaces for business meetings, landscaping, and improved station façades. To spur local livelihoods, the scheme promotes initiatives such as ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks, enabling local entrepreneurs to showcase regional products.

The scheme is significantly reshaping the railway landscape of Assam and the wider Northeast under the jurisdiction of Northeast Frontier Railway. A total of 92 stations have been identified for redevelopment in the NFR zone, with 60 stations across the Northeast being taken up under ABSS. This includes 50 stations in Assam, four in Tripura, and one each in Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. As the gateway to the Northeast, Assam has emerged as the largest beneficiary, with redevelopment spanning major urban hubs as well as key regional towns.

In a landmark achievement, Haibargaon railway station became the first completed Amrit Bharat station in Assam and was inaugurated in May 2025 by Narendra Modi. The redeveloped station sets new benchmarks in passenger amenities, infrastructure and design. Developed on the guiding principle of “Virasat Bhi Vikas Bhi,” it blends contemporary facilities with the cultural essence of Assam, reimagining the station as a vibrant city centre with world-class, Divyangjan-friendly amenities.

Significant progress has been recorded across divisions in Assam. Under the Alipurduar Division, Fakiragram station has achieved 88% physical progress, Kokrajhar 78%, Dhubri 80% and Gauripur 82%. In the Rangiya Division, Majbat station has reached 98% completion, while Viswanath Chariali stands at 97%. Chaparmukh station under the Lumding Division has recorded 85% progress. In the Tinsukia Division, North Lakhimpur station and Simaluguri Junction have each reached 65% progress. In Meghalaya, Mendipathar station under the Rangiya Division has achieved 73% redevelopment progress.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme marks a decisive step toward future-ready railway infrastructure, expected to generate employment, stimulate local businesses, and enhance ease of travel. By combining improved connectivity, modern amenities and preservation of regional identity, the initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to inclusive, balanced development across Assam and the Northeast.
