Milli Yabi, a 12-year-old student from the remote border village of Sarli in Arunachal Pradesh, has secured admission to Sainik School East Siang, aided by a mentorship programme run by the Indian Army’s Spear Corps.

Sarli, situated nearly 350 km from Itanagar and home to around 1,500 residents, has long faced challenges in access to quality education. To support students from border villages, the Spear Corps launched a year-long mentorship initiative in May 2024 for 33 students from Classes 5 and 8.

The programme included more than 80 lessons, 18 mock tests, career guidance sessions, and exposure activities, such as an interaction with the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. Out of the 33 students, 32 successfully cleared the entrance examination.

Milli, whose admission was confirmed on August 18, 2025, is the first from the group to enter a Sainik School. Army officials said the programme highlights the potential of structured mentorship in preparing children from remote regions for leadership roles, including future opportunities at the National Defence Academy.
