Arunachal’s Wakro Meet Records 235 Butterfly Species, Highlighting Rich Biodiversity

A total of 235 butterfly species, including 35 rare and uncommon varieties, were recorded during the three-day 2nd Wakro Butterfly Meet held at Wakro and the Kamlang Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district. The event also marked the 8th Northeast Butterfly Meet.

According to an official report released on Monday, sightings included unique species such as Swinhoe’s Flat, White Dragontail, Green Dragontail, Columbine, Nagatree Brown, Gray Commodore, Sergeant Major, and Dusky Diadem.

The event drew participation from 85 enthusiasts across India, including representatives from Arunachal, Asaam, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and West Bengal, along with one participant from France. Students from PM Shri Government Higher Secondary School, Don Bosco School, and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Wakro, also joined the programme.

The meet featured guided nature activities such as butterfly and bird walks, awareness talks, art sessions, and quizzes led by naturalists Nawang Gyatso Bhutia, Kamal Azad, Roshan Upadhaya, Atanu Bose, and organiser Lokesh Mam.

Organised by the Kamlang Valley Nature Club in collaboration with the Butterflies of North Eastern India Group and the Kamlang Tiger Reserve & Wildlife Sanctuary, the event aimed to promote awareness about butterfly conservation and the region’s rich biodiversity.
