Itanagar, April 13: Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested a 33-year-old man from Assam’s North Lakhimpur district for allegedly cheating people by promising pharmacy and business licences.
The accused, identified as Debojit Sharma, a resident of Bihpuria, was arrested on April 10 from Pithaguri in Mazgaon after over a year of surveillance, Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega said.
Police said Sharma had been absconding since 2023 and allegedly cheated several individuals in Doimukh and Naharlagun by collecting money on the promise of securing official licences. He was reportedly operating under false assurances related to pharmacy and business documentation.
Following his arrest, Sharma was produced before the Naharlagun court, which sent him to judicial custody. Police have registered a case under Section 318(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to aggravated cheating at Naharlagun police station.
Authorities said multiple cases against him are also pending at various police stations in the Itanagar Capital Region, including Naharlagun and Yupia.
Police have urged the public to verify credentials carefully before engaging in any licence-related transactions to avoid falling victim to similar frauds.
