Itanagar, Feb 25: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday condemned recent attacks on people from the Northeast, promising strict action against the perpetrators.

The leaders spoke following an incident in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, where three girls from Arunachal Pradesh were subjected to racial slurs by their neighbors. Rijiju, who has been personally monitoring the case with police, confirmed that arrests have been made and assured stringent legal action. “We will teach a lesson to ensure no one ill-treats anyone from the Northeast,” he said.

Chief Minister Khandu, after speaking with the Delhi Police Commissioner, emphasized swift justice. “The CP is personally in touch with me. The accused will be dealt with as per law. We stand firmly with our three sisters—their safety, dignity, and justice are our highest priority,” he said.

Rijiju noted that past incidents, including cases resulting in fatalities, often went unaddressed. “Now, we are here to protect our brothers and sisters from the Northeast,” he added.

A Delhi court remanded the accused couple, Ruby Jain and Harsh, to 14 days’ judicial custody until March 11. Magistrate Bhanu Pratap Singh approved the order after their production from Malviya Nagar Police Station.

The February 20 incident reportedly arose from a dispute over repair work in the victims’ rented home. Police have invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation, insulting women’s modesty, and promoting enmity.
