The Centre and the Arunachal Pradesh government on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to implement a special development package for the Siang region. The initiative is designed as a pre-investment measure for the upcoming Upper Siang Multipurpose Project (SUMP) and aims to boost livelihoods and infrastructure in Siang and Upper Siang districts.
The package will focus on sectors such as piggery, poultry, animal husbandry, fisheries, horticulture, bamboo, handloom, eco-tourism, and beekeeping. Plans also include branding and promotion of indigenous products, including textiles and bamboo-based goods.
Under the programme, new infrastructure such as resource centres, urban haats, emporia, and raw material hubs will be established, while existing facilities will be upgraded. Officials stated that the initiative is intended to strengthen local economies and ensure sustainable development.
The SUMP, a large hydroelectric and water storage project, is expected to contribute to clean energy generation, flood control, and water security in the Brahmaputra basin. The special package is aimed at preparing communities in the region to benefit from the long-term opportunities associated with the project.
