Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday criticized the Congress for neglecting the Northeast while ruling from Delhi, highlighting his government’s focus on regional development.
Modi said Congress governments ignored the Northeast due to its smaller parliamentary representation. “Arunachal receives the first rays of the sun but was kept away from the rays of development. Congress thought the state had fewer seats, so why pay attention. Our government has made the region a priority,” he said.
He alleged that corruption and heavy taxation marked Congress rule, citing income tax levied on earnings as low as Rs 2 lakh and essentials, including children’s toffees, taxed at over 30 percent. Modi contrasted this with the BJP’s approach, noting ministers now frequently visit the Northeast, with over 800 visits recorded.
During his Arunachal visit, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects worth over Rs 5,100 crore, including two hydropower projects — the 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project and the 186 MW Tato-1 Hydro Electric Project — and a modern Convention Center in Tawang for hosting global events.
He also engaged with local business leaders and taxpayers on the Centre’s revised Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework, designed to ease compliance, lower living costs, and support MSMEs.
Later, Modi will travel to Tripura to offer prayers at the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple and inaugurate the redevelopment of its temple complex at Matabari.
