Guwahati, Feb 25: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday strongly condemned the incident in Malviya Nagar where three women from the Northeast were allegedly subjected to racial abuse and threats by a couple.
In a video message shared on X, Gupta said, “Delhi belongs to everyone. Here, the dignity, respect, and safety of every citizen is paramount. I will meet with them personally. The police are taking legal action with full responsibility, and we will ensure that the strictest possible action is taken against the culprits. Harassing, discriminating against, or humiliating any daughter will not be tolerated at any cost.”
She further added, “We are all one, and the safety of every daughter is our utmost responsibility.”
The incident gained attention after a video went viral showing the couple hurling racial slurs and threats during a dispute over dust from electrical work at the women’s rented accommodation.
Police have arrested Ruby Jain (35) and her husband Harsh Singh, invoking provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan confirmed that the investigation is being conducted by an ACP-rank officer as mandated by law.
Political leaders including Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Minister for Development of the Northeastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia have also condemned the incident.
According to police, the altercation occurred last Friday around 3:30 pm when dust from electrical installation work allegedly fell into the flat below, leading to a heated argument. The women, aged between 19 and 23, reported racial slurs, derogatory remarks, and threats, leaving them mentally harassed though no physical injuries were sustained.
