Itanagar, Nov 12: An all-women high-altitude trekking expedition, featuring personnel from the Indian Army, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), and the local Monpa community, was flagged off from Zemithang in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

The expedition was inaugurated by General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Gajraj Corps, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh. Defence PRO Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said the initiative aims to promote women’s empowerment and encourage adventure sports in the region.

Set against the scenic landscape of Zemithang, the trek brings together women from diverse backgrounds to support community engagement, adventure tourism, and the government’s vision of vibrant villages in Arunachal’s border areas.

Following a week-long acclimatisation in higher altitudes, the team has embarked on a 96-hour trek across the challenging terrain of the Eastern Himalayas, with routes ascending above 13,000 feet. The expedition is expected to test the endurance, courage, and determination of the participants.

Described as a maiden initiative, the trek highlights the resilience and adventurous spirit of Indian women, aiming to inspire greater participation in high-altitude and adventure sports in the future.
