An army porter from Assam, who had been missing for 20 days in the remote Upper Siang district, was rescued following an extensive search and rescue operation, police confirmed.

The rescued porter, Unnot Taye of Akshipur village in Dhemaji district, went missing on September 20 while returning from duty in the Midak area, around 25 km from Panggo village. Taye, along with 11 other porters from Assam, had been deployed on September 17 for work along the Panggo–Jorging foot track near the Indo-China border.

A missing complaint was filed at Tuting Police Station on September 23, prompting a large-scale operation led by Tuting officer-in-charge SI Jumken Rina, supported by NGOs, army porters, and villagers from Panggo and Migging. The team navigated dense forests, steep slopes, and riverbanks for nearly three weeks.

Taye was found unconscious near Midak Camp on October 10 by a porter from Kugging village. A rescue team, including police personnel, medical staff, villagers, and members of the Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (Panggo Unit), provided immediate assistance. Tuting medical officer Dr Maktel Yompang administered first aid before Taye was carried 25 km through rugged terrain to the nearest roadhead.

He was admitted to the District Hospital in Yingkiong on October 12 and later shifted to Bakin Pertin General Hospital in Pasighat, where he regained stability and was reunited with his family.

Upper Siang deputy commissioner Talo Jerang praised the rescue operation as a demonstration of dedication and teamwork, highlighting the efforts of SP Token Saring, ADC Pandov Perme, SI Rina, Dr Yompang, and all volunteers involved.
