Scientists have discovered a new plant species, Berberis myriovula, in the high-altitude region of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. The species is distinguished by having up to 17 ovules in a single ovary — the highest ever recorded within the Berberis genus.
The discovery was made by researchers from the CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST) in collaboration with scientists from the United Kingdom. Researchers believe this rare trait may represent a unique evolutionary adaptation to the Eastern Himalayan environment.
The finding reinforces Arunachal Pradesh’s status as a biodiversity hotspot and highlights the significance of continued field research and conservation in the region. The research team credited the discovery to extensive exploration efforts and support from the state government.
