The International Tawang Marathon 3.0, themed ‘Run Above the Clouds’, concluded on Friday with over 6,200 participants demonstrating endurance and determination amid the scenic landscapes of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, near the Indo-China border.
The high-altitude event, held at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, was flagged off by Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps. The marathon aimed to promote fitness, unity, adventure, and national integration in the Himalayan frontier.
The marathon featured four categories 42 km, 21 km, 10 km, and 5 km attracting participants from across India and abroad, including three runners from Kenya. The event saw over 1,200 women and girls take part, along with contingents from the Indian Army, SSB, ITBP, local administration, students, and civilians.
Participants ran along scenic routes lined with prayer flags and snow-capped peaks, passing landmarks such as the Tawang Monastery, one of Asia’s largest Buddhist monasteries. Organisers described the experience as “Running Above the Clouds,” highlighting the perseverance required in challenging high-altitude conditions.

Local residents noted that the marathon has boosted tourism in Tawang while promoting sustainability under the theme “Clean Tawang, Green Tawang.” The event also showcased the district’s cultural richness and reinforced community spirit among participants and locals alike.
