Bengali actor Swastika Mukherjee will lead the Indo-American co-production thriller Chheledhora, with principal photography scheduled to begin soon in Itanagar and Ziro, according to a report by Variety.
Written and directed by Shieladitya Moulik, the film follows Brishti, a divorced mother whose impulsive decision to take her daughter away for a birthday surprise coincides with a real abduction, triggering a series of events that blend family drama, thriller elements and dark humour. The story centres on a morally complex female protagonist navigating personal trauma and responsibility.
Set for filming across locations in Arunachal Pradesh through the end of March, the project is being positioned for the international festival circuit. The narrative explores themes of fractured families, healing and second chances through the emotional journeys of parents and children.
Speaking to the publication, Moulik said the film focuses on flawed individuals rediscovering empathy and humanity. Mukherjee described her character as emotionally wounded yet driven by fierce maternal love, calling the story a reflection on motherhood, forgiveness and resilience.
Mukherjee is known for performances in projects such as Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, Paatal Lok and Qala, among others.
The film is jointly produced by Handyyman and US-based Sita22 Films, founded by executive Anindita Mukherjee. Additional casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
