A self-styled ‘Sergeant Major’ of the banned ULFA (I) was killed in a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles in Namsai district, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Security forces made contact with the insurgent group in the MS-6 area during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. The body of the slain militant, identified as Iwon Axom of ULFA (I), was recovered after daylight, said Guwahati-based Defence PRO Lt Col Mahendra Rawat.
A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of one rifle, an RPG round, and three rucksacks, indicating the group could have been planning a larger movement or attack.
