Guwahati, Nov 30: The Border Security Force (BSF) Guwahati Frontier has seized narcotics and other contraband worth Rs 12.7 crore between January 1 and November 29, 2024, in a series of operations targeting cross-border smuggling. The confiscated goods include phenyl, gold, Yaba tablets, ganja, liquor, and large quantities of sugar.
During this period, the BSF arrested 131 individuals involved in smuggling activities, including 35 Bangladeshi nationals and 96 Indian nationals. Key seizures included 68,851 bottles of phensedyl, 1,655 kg of ganja, 3,060 grams of gold, 10,881 Yaba tablets, 1,017 bottles of liquor, and 1.86 lakh kg of sugar.
The BSF Guwahati Frontier, tasked with securing the 509 km-long Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam and West Bengal, faces challenges in patrolling riverine borders and Charlands. Since its establishment in 2011, the BSF has deployed 11 battalions to maintain security in the region.
BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harmeet Singh commended the force for its operational success and strong ties with local communities. The BSF also continues to collaborate with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to address border issues and promote peace.
In a separate operation on November 21, 2024, the BSF seized 528 kg of cumin seeds, valued at Rs 3.69 lakh, in Coochbehar district, West Bengal. The seeds were being smuggled into Bangladesh. The BSF remains committed to intensifying its efforts to combat smuggling and ensure security along the border.
