Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that around 5,000 Facebook accounts, mostly operated from Islamic countries, are under investigation for allegedly promoting content related to the Assam Congress and a particular political leader.
Speaking to the media, Sarma said a forensic audit has been conducted on recently activated social media accounts. “We have studied 2,092 accounts so far. Among them, 618 are from Bangladesh, 236 from Pakistan, and others from countries including Palestine, Egypt, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Indonesia, France, and Germany,” he said.
The Chief Minister alleged that the users of these accounts are from a particular community and described them as “hardcore Islamic fundamentalists.” He added that these accounts do not follow Rahul Gandhi or the Indian National Congress but engage only with Assam-related political pages.
The investigation into the remaining accounts is ongoing.
