A 62-year-old man from Varanasi was rescued by police in Assam’s Sivasagar district after a marriage proposal to a local woman sparked public anger on August 29.
The man had been in contact with a 26-year-old woman for three years through Facebook. Believing their online friendship had developed into a commitment, he traveled to Sivasagar to propose marriage. However, the woman declined his proposal in person.
Following the refusal, local residents confronted the man, creating a tense situation. Police intervened, rescued him from the crowd, and brought him to the station.
“He was released later, and the next day he left Sivasagar and Assam,” a police officer said.
