Guwahati, May 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that 73 individuals have been arrested across the state for allegedly acting as “Pakistani agents” in a statewide crackdown on anti-national activities.
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma stated, “It is unfortunate that some individuals enjoy every privilege India offers salary, power, and position yet their loyalty lies across the border. They draw everything from Bharat but work only for Pakistan’s interests. This is betrayal.”
As of 10:30 am, two fresh arrests were reported Faridul Islam by Chirang Police and Sahabuddin Rain by Hojai Police bringing the total number of arrests to 73.
The arrests follow heightened monitoring of social media platforms by Assam Police, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The accused were allegedly found posting anti-India and pro-Pakistan content, prompting swift action from authorities.
Sarma credited Assam Police for their efforts and reiterated that strict action would be taken against anyone residing in India who supports Pakistan or terrorism.
The development comes in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, under which Indian Armed Forces conducted precision strikes on nine terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) on May 7. Following the attack in Pahalgam, the Indian government also suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty after a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting.
