Guwahati, Dec 31: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has reiterated its commitment to implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in 2025, which aims to provide constitutional safeguards for the state’s indigenous communities. In a press briefing on Monday, AGP president and minister Atul Bora, along with working president and minister Keshab Mahanta, outlined their plans and expressed optimism for the upcoming year.

Clause 6 of the 1985 Assam Accord, which concluded the six-year anti-foreigners’ movement, includes provisions to protect the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the Assamese people. Bora emphasized that safeguarding the interests of indigenous communities will be a top priority for the AGP in 2025.

“We are fully committed to the implementation of the Assam Accord, which will secure the future of Assam’s indigenous population,” Bora stated, highlighting the importance of 2025 in advancing the state’s objectives.

The Assam government has already taken steps to act on the 52 recommendations made by the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma committee for the execution of Clause 6. Bora confirmed that many of these recommendations will be implemented by April 2025, with some requiring joint efforts from both the state and central governments.

Despite the emergence of newer regional parties such as Assam Jatiya Parishad and Raijor Dal, Bora reaffirmed that AGP remains the dominant regional force in Assam, with deep roots in the anti-foreigners’ movement. To strengthen its position, AGP announced the launch of a year-long campaign in 2025, titled “AGP in Every Village, AGP in Every Town City,” aimed at connecting with people across the state.

In addition, AGP declared 2025 as “Mother Tongue Year,” with a focus on promoting indigenous languages and fostering unity among Assam’s diverse communities.

Bora concluded, “Regionalism continues to be the core of Assam’s identity, and AGP is committed to driving the state’s development while ensuring the protection of its people’s rights.”
