Asom Gana Parishad president Atul Bora said the party will decide the number of seats it contests in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections after assessing ground realities, days after party founder Prafulla Kumar Mahanta suggested that AGP should contest 80 seats independently.

Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Bora said the party, a constituent of the ruling alliance in Assam, aims to improve its performance compared to previous elections, which are expected to be held in March–April next year. He said discussions on seat-sharing and strategy will be held within the party in the coming days.

Bora said Mahanta’s statement reflected a personal view and added that AGP respects differing opinions within the party. He said AGP follows internal democratic processes and allows leaders to express their views.

He added that the party cannot ignore current political and organisational realities while taking decisions related to elections. Earlier this month, Mahanta had called on AGP to contest 80 seats on its own despite being part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

In the 126-member Assam Assembly, the BJP has 64 legislators, AGP has nine, United People’s Party Liberal has seven, and Bodoland People’s Front has three. The opposition includes the Congress with 26 seats, All India United Democratic Front with 15, CPI(M) with one seat, and one Independent legislator.

Bora said 2026 would be an important year for AGP as it prepares for the Assembly elections and works to strengthen its organisation at the grassroots level. He said the party is aiming for a better electoral outcome, which he said would help strengthen regional political forces and governance in Assam.
