Guwahati, Feb 12: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal on Wednesday demanded the immediate arrest of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and sought a court order preventing him from contesting elections, following the circulation of a controversial video allegedly showing the CM pointing a gun at members of the Muslim community.

In a self-recorded video, Ajmal condemned what he described as a series of hate speeches against the community over the past six months. He said, “Just two days ago, it was shown that Himanta Biswa Sarma is pointing a gun at some people from the Muslim community. The court should order that he should not contest elections, and he should be arrested immediately and sent to jail so that he comes to his senses.” He added that Sarma does not deserve to hold office even for a day.

The video, which surfaced on social media on February 7 via the official BJP Assam X account, was deleted a day later but continues to circulate. It reportedly depicts Sarma symbolically firing at point-blank range toward Muslims, with overlaid text stating, “Foreigner-free Assam, No mercy,” “Why did you not go to Pakistan?” and “There is no forgiveness to Bangladeshis.” The content targets Bengal-origin Muslims, often referred to derogatorily as “Miyas” or “Bangladeshis.”

Following the video’s circulation, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) filed a complaint at Dispur Police Station on Tuesday, calling the video “highly provocative and communal.” Leaders Sibamoni Bora and Diganta Bauman urged action under relevant penal sections to prevent disruption of communal harmony.

Separately, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) approached the Supreme Court seeking directions against Sarma’s alleged discriminatory remarks. Advocate Nizam Pasha requested an urgent hearing before Chief Justice Surya Kant, who stated, “When elections come, part of it is fought in the Supreme Court. We will see.”

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi also lodged a complaint with Hyderabad City Police on Monday, describing the video as “genocidal hate speech” and demanding criminal action, arguing that police must act suo motu.

Responding to the controversy, Sarma said on Monday that he was ready to face arrest, stating, “I am ready to go to jail… I stand by my words; I am against Bangladeshi infiltrators and will continue to be.”
