The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has expressed concerns over the visit of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood A. Madani to Assam, cautioning that the trip could disturb social harmony in the state.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was seeking political gain from Madani’s visit. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and resist any divisive agenda, whether from Hindu or Muslim organisations.
Gogoi cited past instances where comments by external leaders had sparked unrest, highlighting Madani’s planned meetings with AIUDF leaders and visits to eviction-affected areas in Goalpara as potentially politically motivated. He suggested these actions might provoke controversy, allowing the government to benefit politically.
However, Madani avoided confrontation and called on the state to carry out eviction drives in accordance with Supreme Court directives. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma warned Madani not to “cross his limits,” stating that any violation could result in legal action, including arrest.
