Guwahati, April 2: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate from Central Guwahati, Kunki Chowdhury, has strongly rejected recent allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against her and her mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury.

Responding to Sarma’s claims that her mother supports “anti-national” figures and has disrespected Assamese cultural sentiments, Chowdhury dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated. She stated that such remarks are intended to divert attention from key public issues ahead of the elections.

Taking a swipe at the Chief Minister, Chowdhury said his comments reflect the BJP’s fear of losing the Central Guwahati seat. “These statements suggest they have already accepted defeat,” she remarked.

She also added, “After hearing my name from the Chief Minister, the whole of India will now know who Kunki Chowdhury is,” thanking him sarcastically for increasing her visibility.

Chowdhury emphasized that her campaign remains focused on addressing local concerns and safeguarding the interests of the people of Guwahati. She further accused the Chief Minister of resorting to personal attacks instead of engaging in meaningful discussions on governance and development.

Earlier in the day, Sarma had alleged that Sujata Gurung Chowdhury supported jailed activists Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, and further claimed she was a “known beef eater,” saying he had photographic evidence. Sarma argued that this showed disregard for the sentiments of Sanatani Assamese communities.
