Dibrugarh, Jan 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects worth Rs 1,715 crore in Assam’s Dibrugarh, aimed at strengthening the region’s infrastructure and administrative capacity.
In the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, local MPs, MLAs, state cabinet ministers, and senior officials, Shah laid the foundation stone for a Rs 284 crore second legislative assembly complex and MLA hostel. The project will establish Dibrugarh as Assam’s second administrative hub, featuring a three-storey assembly building, a nine-storey MLA hostel, an 800-seat auditorium, and security barracks.
Shah also inaugurated the first phase of a Rs 238 crore modern multi-disciplinary sports complex and laid the foundation for its Rs 209 crore second phase. The initial facilities include an indoor stadium, swimming pool, football field, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, along with hostels. The expansion will add seating for 30,000 spectators, a central playground, and an athletic track.
Other key initiatives include a Rs 292 crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre for treating wild animals, equipped with advanced laboratories, training units, an educational block, museum, auditorium, clinical facilities, and radiation labs to improve coordination among forest officials, veterinarians, and researchers.
Additionally, Shah launched a Rs 692 crore wetland restoration project under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, covering 15 wetlands across nine districts. The project aims to prevent urban flooding, enhance water retention, and strengthen flood management in the Brahmaputra basin.
