Guwahati, Feb 19: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will begin a three-day visit to Assam on Thursday night, arriving in Silchar ahead of the Assembly elections expected to be held in March–April.
Officials said Shah will stay overnight in Silchar, located in Cachar district, before travelling on Friday to the Border Security Force’s Natunpur border outpost along the India–Bangladesh frontier to review security preparedness. During the visit, he is scheduled to launch the Vibrant Villages Programme aimed at strengthening infrastructure and improving livelihood opportunities in border areas.
Later in the day, Shah will address a BJP rally in the Barak Valley, formally marking the party’s election campaign launch in the region. He will subsequently travel to Agartala in neighbouring Tripura for a brief visit before returning to Assam the same evening.
On Saturday, Shah is scheduled to attend the annual day parade of the Central Reserve Police Force at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, marking the first time the event will be held in the Northeast region.
He will also lay the foundation stone for the new campus of the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Kasutoli in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati.
The visit will be Shah’s third trip to Assam since December 29, as the BJP intensifies preparations seeking a third consecutive term in the 126-member state Assembly.
