The Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday suspended two opposition MLAs for the remainder of the ongoing winter session following a Privilege Committee report that found them guilty of misconduct towards Deputy Speaker Numal Momin.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary moved a resolution recommending the suspension of Congress MLA Nurul Huda and Baghbor legislator Sherman Ali Ahmed, citing the committee’s findings. Ahmed, who had earlier been suspended from the Congress, was also included in the resolution.

The Privilege Committee report alleged that Huda attacked Deputy Speaker Momin, while Ahmed used unparliamentary language against him. Acting on the committee’s recommendation, the Assembly voted in favor of their suspension, despite protests from Congress members.

Congress members demanded video evidence of the incidents. “There were many CCTVs in the corridor. We had sought the footage, but nothing was provided. We cannot accept this report,” said Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar, defending Huda’s actions as part of a peaceful protest.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary stated that the Privilege Committee had already submitted its report and that its findings should not be questioned.

The suspension traces back to incidents in March when Huda was accused of attacking Momin outside the Assembly during a protest, an allegation denied by Huda and his party. Ahmed reportedly used an insulting term in the House around the same time, which was later expunged from the proceedings.

The five-day winter session of the Assam Assembly began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday.
