The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Executive Director and Regional Officer of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Guwahati, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh. The arrest was made on October 14 during a CBI trap operation, where the officials were caught red-handed taking the bribe from a private individual.
The bribe was reportedly linked to granting an extension of time (EOT) and a completion certificate for the 4-laning project of National Highway-37 from Demow to Moran Bypass and other associated contracts in Assam.
Simultaneous raids at seven locations across India led to the seizure of Rs 2.62 crore in cash. Investigations also revealed ownership of multiple assets, including nine landed plots and 20 apartments, as well as documents related to the purchase of luxury vehicles by the arrested officials and their family members. Asset verification is ongoing.
The accused is scheduled to be produced before the Special CBI Court in Guwahati for further proceedings.
