Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that nearly 40 lakh women across the state are actively participating in income-generating activities through self-help groups (SHGs), highlighting the success of the government’s welfare initiatives for financial empowerment.
Addressing a gathering at the Dehing Sports Complex in Margherita during the second phase of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan (MMUA), CM Sarma said Assam currently has around four lakh SHGs contributing to socio-economic transformation in both rural and urban areas.
He noted that eight lakh women have already achieved annual earnings of over ₹1 lakh. Many women have become adept at banking, production, and self-sufficiency. Some of these successful women, referred to as ‘Lakhpati Baideos,’ were invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Delhi in recognition of their achievements. The government aims to help more women reach similar milestones, CM Sarma added.
