Guwahati, Feb 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences following the death of 16 people in a coal mine explosion in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday. Authorities said rescue operations are ongoing as several labourers remain trapped inside the mine.
In a post on X, Sarma said unconfirmed reports indicated that some of the victims could be from Asaam. He stated that the Asaam government is coordinating with Meghalaya authorities and would extend necessary assistance to affected families if the victims’ identities confirm links to the state.
According to officials, the explosion occurred at a suspected illegal rat-hole mine in the Thangskai area. East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar said 16 bodies have been recovered so far, and one survivor sustained burn injuries. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force, police personnel, and local volunteers are continuing search and rescue operations at the site.
Officials added that efforts are focused on locating remaining workers who are believed to be trapped. Authorities have not yet released the full list of victims, and further verification is underway.
Sarma conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and said the state government would provide support if affected individuals are identified as residents of Asaam. Further details are awaited as rescue operations continue.
