Guwahati, Jun 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday addressed the 2nd North East Mining Ministers’ Conclave in Guwahati, showcasing the state’s initiatives to develop a sustainable and investment-friendly mining ecosystem. The conclave was attended by Union Minister Kishan Reddy, along with ministers from all Northeastern states and key industry stakeholders.
Speaking through his official X handle, Sarma said the Northeast region holds vast potential in the mining sector, backed by rich natural resources. He underlined the importance of balancing development with environmental sustainability, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a circular economy and zero-waste mining.
The Chief Minister informed that Assam has recently attracted investment commitments worth over ₹46,000 crore in the mining sector. The state has also approved the formation of the State Mineral Exploration Trust (SMET) to strengthen minor mineral exploration.
Key developments shared at the conclave include:
Auction of five limestone blocks; two more in progress
Revival of North Eastern Coalfields (NEC) Margherita projects through lease extension
Identification of 21 new mineral blocks including granite, quartzite, and China clay
Rare earth mineral exploration in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong
Mobilisation of ₹237 crore under District Mineral Foundation (DMF) for welfare initiatives
Operationalisation of Assam Mineral Development Corporation Limited (AMDCL) and SMET
Allocation of land by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) for regional mining operations
Implementation of circular economy rules for sustainable, zero-waste mining practices
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister hosted a breakfast meeting with Union Minister Kishan Reddy and other dignitaries at Mayfair Spring Valley Resort, Sonapur, ahead of the conclave.
The conclave aimed to strengthen collaboration among Northeastern states to unlock the region’s mining potential while ensuring environmental safeguards.
