Guwahati, July 6: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday inaugurated the Bhagadatta Flyover-2 at Downtown Point in Guwahati, connecting Rukminigaon Road with Bormotoria Link Road. The 660-metre-long, four-lane flyover was completed in a record time of nine months, well ahead of its originally planned 18-month schedule.
Constructed at a cost of Rs. 112 crore by RITES India Limited, the flyover was built using advanced composite structure technology. It is named after King Bhagadatta of ancient Kamarupa. The earlier flyover at the Super Market area has now been renamed Bhagadatta Flyover-1.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister said the project is part of a broader initiative to ease traffic congestion and strengthen urban infrastructure in Guwahati. He added that parking space has been created beneath the flyover to support local businesses.
Sarma also announced several upcoming infrastructure projects across the city, including flyovers and ramps at Ganeshguri, Arya Nagar, Maligaon, and Radha Govinda Baruah Road, as well as an elevated corridor at Bharalumukh. He stated that the Cycle Factory and Bharalumukh flyovers are expected to be completed by February, while the Noonmati–Chandmari flyover is likely to be ready by April.
The Chief Minister informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Narengi–Kurua bridge and the Guwahati Ring Road project in September. The Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge is expected to be completed by January, and a new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is set to be inaugurated in November.
Highlighting Guwahati’s development, Sarma said the city is emerging as a key employment hub in the Northeast, with around 10 lakh jobs created.
The event concluded with the felicitation of engineers and officials involved in the successful completion of the Bhagadatta Flyover-2.
